It was very important for me to establish that Albert isn’t afraid BECAUSE he and Gerty are in space, but instead because they’re in a PRIMITIVE ship made by us humans. Albert’s people travel space all the time, and have ships that are used to traversing the depths of space – and all of the dangers they contain.
Human ships are made on the cheap, usually because they are disposable. They use very light materials because it’s easier (and uses less fuel) to escape our gravity and get into space in the first place. That said, we don’t usually go much further than our orbit (mostly to fix satellites, or to visit the space stations) or our moon (to do moon-stuff…because THE MOON!).
So to be clear: Albert isn’t afraid of space. He’s afraid of being in a ship that isn’t very safe (compared to what he’s used to) for space travel.
